Science Week at Woodston

Here at Woodston Primary School, we have been joining in and celebrating British Science Week. This is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that took place between 8th – 17th March. It was wonderful to see the different learning and activities that took place across school. Time was the focus of this year’s Science Week: let’s have a look at what each year group investigated.
In Reception, the children identified how shadows were made. They used torches and card to help with their experiment and recorded their result data in a scientific way.
Children in Year 1 and 2 investigated how different way of making jelly affects how it turns into jelly over time. This was a very messy (but exciting) enquiry to take part in! The children discussed how they could make it a fair test and enjoyed setting up their experiment by deciding which equipment to use and why.
In Year 3 and 4, the children examined particle size and how long different particles took to work through the respiratory system. Using different sized sieves and different materials helped them to complete their investigation. The children worked scientifically by recording their data in tables and drawings to note observations and measurements.
In Year 5 and 6 we will be creating our own water timers by measuring how long it will take water to filter through the bottles. In addition, we will also be making our own sundials after measuring shadow length and directions throughout the day (on a sunny day!).
