Fil Kamps Visit – The Mintridge Foundation
Pro Footballer Visits Woodston!
On Thursday 11th July, we were very fortunate to have a visit from Fil Kamps. Fil is a deaf professional footballer who played for Fulham, Doncaster and England.
In the morning, Fil delivered a brilliant assembly to the whole of Key Stage 2. He talked about his journey and the struggles in life which he has overcome.
Year 6 was the lucky year group who got to work with Fil. They started off with some games which soon turned into games using only sign language. Fil gave a speech about how hard it was growing up and playing sport with hearing impairment, which led us into our next activity. All the year 6 children, including adults, wore ear defenders whilst watching Fil sign the instructions of the game. We then finally finished with a game which included all children and Fil himself. The children LOVED it!
In the afternoon, Fil worked with Woodston's hearing-impaired children. He worked with them in sign language and again finished with a game.
All children who were involved, either working with Fil or playing football with him at lunchtime, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We cannot thank Fil enough for such a great day!
